Room to roam

These chickens seem to be enjoying reclaiming their orchard space from the snow, even though the temperature is still below freezing.

These ones, on the other hand, look like they're quite happy to stay snuggled up inside with a friend: there are seven of them crammed into four nestboxes. And of course the four boxes on the opposite wall were empty...

More snow is forecast for the next few days. I know I'm being impatient, but at this point some warm weather would be very welcome. At the moment I feel more inclined to act like the second set of birds than the first.

Do your hens 'sleep' in the nest boxes? Jointly? Ours used to roost on a bar and only get in the nest box to lay eggs. We had 4 boxes at one point but the girls tended to use only one or two and eventually as their numbers dwindled just the one box. My mother told me that when she was child each hen had her own individual nest box that they slept in. Fascinating the different variations.

Hi Lisa

No, they're just in there if they're laying eggs. There are roosting perches just out of shot to the right. The only time they sleep in there is when they go broody!
