The chicks looked so small next to the perches in their new house that I wasn't really expecting them to use them yet. But by this morning they'd worked it out.
What remarkably bright little things they are. The one in the middle looks like she's having a good nap.

I worried about whether mine would know what to do when the time came. Looks like that won't be an issue. Great pics and darling chicks!
They look so sweet! But I think the perches should be 2" x 2" with the edges rounded off.
I've read differing advice about the perches. Some writers suggest that in cold areas (I guess Canada counts as one of those?!) you can put the 2x4 planks flat, so that the hens keep their feet warm by completely covering them up in the winter. We haven't done that, but will see come the winter whether we should have done!
Although, having said that, the support on the left hand side of the perches is made up of a 2x4 on its flat side, and so is the top of the old manger on the right. So the chickens will be able to choose which ones they prefer.
