There are some fantastic pictures of Ruby-throated hummingbirds on the Internet.This is not one of them.
But it is a small proof that I wasn't imagining things when I thought I saw a hummingbird the other night.
Setting up home in a new country is going to be challenging. A bit like trying to cook a meal in someone else's kitchen. Maybe. This is a record of my experiences as I pack up my old life in England and start a new one in Ontario, Canada, with the aim of becoming more self-sufficient.

I took a lot of photographs of complete darkness yesterday evening, but did manage to get this one, too. It's one of the many bolts of lightning that were sparked off by the passage of a cold front across this region after a hot, humid day. Elsewhere in Ontario, tornadoes touched down, killing at least one person.















I had some leftover cooked ham and the stock that it was cooked in, so it seemed that a summer vegetable and ham risotto would be a perfect way of using all these things up.
